Find your midwife

As soon as you find out you’re pregnant, it’s important to contact your GP and book an appointment with a midwife online or by telephone, ideally before you reach 10 weeks of pregnancy. This is because there are important screening tests that need to be done as soon as possible.

Your first appointment may take place in:

  • Your home
  • A hospital
  • A GP surgery
  • A children’s centre

You can ask your midwife to confirm this and let them know if you need a translator or extra help.

There are some things you will want to consider when making your choice:

  • What kind of antenatal support or training you may want.
  • What place you might want to give birth in (e.g. at home, in a midwife-led unit or obstetric unit).
  • What kind of pain relief you might want access to.

Make your choice and book in with your midwife before you are 10 weeks pregnant. Let your midwife know if you need a translator or any extra help.

Important Tests

Booking early means you’ll get all the important tests and screenings you need during your pregnancy. You can always change your mind about your midwife or where you give birth at a later date.
